This week we have focused on senior projects. Yesterday I went to Ganiard and met some first graders. I met Jordan and Kelsey who were very sweet and were excited to have me there. I read a few books I brought and some of their favorites. They were both good readers. Kelsey struggled a little but she did a very good job of sounding out the words. After working with them I feel really close to them and in some ways it makes me want to become an elementary teacher. It makes me feel important how excited they are to be around me. Unlike in high school, the children are so excited to learn and be there. I want to get to know them and teach them and show them how learning can be fun. Reading is a vital skill to life and instilling the importance at a young age only strengthens this. I can tell they enjoy us being there and I love being around them. I think I chose a great project that makes me happy.

I think the poem we chose to read today was really important. It talked about how you will always be uncertain of tomorrow but you should really only focus on today. What I took away was that you can sit and worry about all the things that could happen, all the scary things you could encounter but you are wasting the day that you have now. You can't control your future but you can control what you are doing right now. People always worry about the future which can be a good thing, but if you' re constantly planning for where you want to be and what you're going to do you will watch your life fly by. You will miss all the beautiful scenery now waiting for the scenery you will see later. There is nothing wrong with planning ahead and preparing yourself but we need to learn to live in the moment, enjoy the life we are living now and cherish the present because if you rush it away it will become your past and you can never change your past. Anything can happen tomorrow but anything can happen today. We worry too much about making our future perfect and forget to be happy now. You can't ignore one part of your life to fix another.
This week we began to think about our senior projects and why we should do something meaningful. We learned the difference between volunteering and leadership. Two terms that may commonly be used interchangeably but actually they are quite different. We are leaders in this class, we are not partaking in someone else's dream, we are building our own. Our Senior projects are meant to be meaningful and powerful. That doesn't mean they have to affect everyone but just a small group of people or a community. I think discussing these topics really helped me understand what is expected of me and why its important to do my best. I think showing the spoken word poem about using your voice was a great introductory to the topic. The messages he is trying to send throughout the ted talk are definitely delivered. I feel inspired to use my voice and channel it into my senior project and make it the best it can be.
Over this week we have focused on identity, we have defined it, created questions from it and read examples of what it is. Last week we wrote our "Where I'm From" poem that prepared us for this project. This project has little regulations, it's almost all interpreting what we're learning and how it relates to identity. I enjoy doing projects like this because everyone can take it from their perspective. It's easy to make it personal and interesting. My groups question is "How does your past influence your ability to change your future?" I think this question is very reflective, and relatable because everyone has struggles in their life that you can either grow from and learn to not make again or fall into the same lifestyle. There people in my life that continue the same negative path they're on but I also know people who choose to better themselves and their lifestyle. Life is all about choices. You can't change your past but you can change your future. You decide everyday who you want to be and the choices you make.
This past week we have immersed ourselves in learning and being creative. On monday we started our Where I'm From poems. I really enjoyed this project. I feel that I was forced to look at myself from a different viewpoint. I was very reflective of my life and my family. I also found it very interesting to listen to what my classmates wrote about and hear where they're from. Our class is very small and I think we all trust each other to present in front of one another. I have learned more about myself and my peers. The Hate you poem that you read on Tuesday stuck with me. The word hate is not a big word but it is a strong word and this poem did a good job giving that message. This week I have been very creative and analytical. I really enjoying working on our creative writing, I can always write to the prompts that you suggest. Unlike in the beginning of this class when I was nervous to share a piece of my writing, now I feel confident and comfortable. Also, this week we discussed power and Identity, both relevant and applicable topics. I think studying identity is really important. We are all trying to create a name for ourselves trying to label one another and categorize people into groups. We are human, we are people, but we are not defined by what others see as.
