Offred has stumbled across a latin phrase scribbled into her dresser. This is a sign of rebellion, written language is forbidden and it's a tiny piece of hope, even curiosity for her. She is putting together clues, wondering, and try to piece together what is happening and how she can leave. Together the electorate is banning together, becoming stronger and forming a resistance against the prison they are being held in. Offred is fighting for her life, and the basic human rights she deserves. Because there is no shared leadership the maids may be treated however badly and there is no one to stand up for them or fight for what's right. Even the wife, another woman who is witnessing the problem is indifferent. She feels no empathy towards them. She too just wants them to become pregnant so she does not have to think about them. Offred is trying to hold onto anything that still makes her, her. She remembers back to before things were bad, she holds on to hope and any glimpse that things are capable of change.

Government exists because people need or want a larger body governing and overseeing what is happening. Government is not perfect but it is necessary. Sometimes when things go wrong in politics we blame the government for failing when it's only a system. A system can't fail, it's the people running it and bending it. As a society we always need to improve our government and make sure it is representing us. It needs to reflect our values, support our freedoms and never become too powerful. It should work for us and what we stand for not the other way around. As people who are being governed we should never become compliant, we must always fight for ourselves and others and the issues affecting us. When no one is speaking up we are all silenced and that is a scary thing. Government can connect people and bring out the best in our beliefs.
This relates to shared leadership because it shows the negative side effects of one party that is in control that has no empathy for their people or their consequences. In the clip the characters have no checks or balances on their power which led to them dictating all decisions. They got rid of all hope for people and education. They wanted a supreme race that did not include all of the people. In this type of government the people have no power, or voice, no freedom or purpose. Too much power to one group can overlook all people and any freedoms they have. This clip related to today and the issues we are having. Our government is trying to gain control in all areas in life. They are slowly trying to remove all of our basic, human rights. This is very scary because our country has only progressed slightly in the equality and freedoms we have. I do not want to move back any further and have the rights I deserve to be taken away. The video was an example of the consequences of no shared leadership and how badly it can go. I support signing statements but my opinion on them is also circumstantial. I think it shows that America is a democracy with the President able to pass, or veto a bill and add his opinion about it, but this can also give him an unfair advantage. The only person allowed to give a signing statement is the president so he has no check on this power. I don't think it is right that the president can turn down a bill by simply a signing statement.
